Carnton Plantation, Franklin – The village of Franklin sees a handful of days perfectly constructed for baseball. Today was one of them. The game started at 12:00 in cloudless 74-degree sunshine. A healthy, cool breeze blew south toward right field, lending distance to the wrongsiders in the lineups.
The Farriers took the day with a score of 12-3 and have begun the season at 2-0. The victories came early when Goob won the bat toss in his 2017 debut. Farriers defense was strong. The Distillers scored one run in the top of the 1st inning, but left three ducks on the pond.
The offense was the day’s story, however. The Farriers seized the lead in their half of the 1st, plating 3 runs and smashing 3 doubles in a row. A 7-run 6th inning cemented the win.
The game was not without its terror, however. Dustin “Dapper” Martin made the 3rd out of the 5th inning on a high fly ball to shortstop – despite no less than 2 bobbles. Unfortunately, the ball came down straight on his right pinkie finger, breaking the bone and skin. And immediately he was on-deck, no less. Blood was hastily wiped away and Toothpick applied a makeshift splint made from a bent spoon of an unknown, alien material. The splint didn’t slow Dapper down; he got single then and another 2 innings later. Dapper was awarded the game ball for his fortitude.
Today’s noontime game was the only scheduled game at Carnton.
